margin: auto;\"><div class=\"sc_section_inner\"><h6 class=\"sc_section_subtitle sc_item_subtitle\">Theory<\/h6><div class=\"sc_section_content_wrap\">\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element  vc_custom_1683612450690\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">THE IMPORTANCE OF ROLLER DIAMETER<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">On chassis dynamometers, <strong>the diameter of the rollers is one of the main limiting factors for measurable power.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>This limit is<\/strong> <strong>imposed<\/strong> by the maximum speed attainable on the test bench, which is determined <strong>by two factors:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Outer diameter of dyno rollers<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Maximum speed in rpm of the support bearings used in the test bench<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The upright supports <\/strong>(bearings)<strong> available on the market<\/strong>, suitable for the diameters and weights required for this type of use, <strong>are certified for maximum speeds around 3,000 rpm<\/strong> (with a few exceptions at 3,500 rpm).<\/p>\n<p>Accordingly, <strong>given the diameter of the rollers<\/strong> (and their circumference) <strong>we can deduce the maximum speed attainable on the test bench <\/strong>(knowing that each roller revolution obviously corresponds to a given mileage).<\/p>\n<p>For the purposes of the calculations set out below, we have taken as references:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>i <strong>highest-performance bearings available<\/strong>, certified to<strong> 3,500 rpm <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>i <strong>Popular roller diameters<\/strong> between the various producers:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h6><strong>MAXIMUM SPEEDS ON CHASSIS DYNAMOMETERS<\/strong><\/h6>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>240 mm rollers<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; <strong>Maximum speed 158 km\/h<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>318 mm rollers<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; <strong>Max. speed 210 km\/h<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>400 mm rollers<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; <strong>Max. speed\u00a0<\/strong><strong>264 km\/h<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/motycs.it\/en\/product\/4wd-chassis-dynamometers\/\">Sport Devices chassis dynamometers<\/a><\/strong> <strong>are equipped with<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/motycs.it\/en\/product\/4wd-chassis-dynamometers\/\"><strong>500 mm rollers<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0&#8211; <strong>Max. speed <\/strong><strong>330 km\/h<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/motycs.it\/en\/product\/4wd-chassis-dynamometers\/\"><strong>635 mm rollers<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; <strong>Max. speed <\/strong><strong>419 km\/h<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A <strong>large-diameter roller is also of fundamental importance<\/strong>, in order to <strong>avoid tyre slippage<\/strong> during bench tests (which would generate power reading losses),<\/p>\n<p>This <strong>thanks to the natural and is wider<\/strong> <strong>contact surface between tyre and roller.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h6><strong>TYRE INDENTATION<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>The smaller this contact area <\/strong>between tyre and roller, <strong>the higher the shear load <\/strong>('indentation'), <strong>operating on the contact surface of the tread<\/strong>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">These forces, <strong>not foreseen <\/strong>in the normal design of road tyres, <strong>deform and continuously stress the side walls during bench tests. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Combining<strong> high power and high speed, with small diameter rollers<\/strong>, this high deformation (indentation) <strong>can overheat the tyres, <\/strong>with the risk of<strong> compromise both their integrity and the results of the tests<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1191\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/motycs.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/alfarome-gt-awd-dyno-motycs-sportdevices.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1191\" class=\"wp-image-1191 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/motycs.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/alfarome-gt-awd-dyno-motycs-sportdevices.jpg\" alt=\"sport devices dyno roller bench\" width=\"800\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/motycs.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/alfarome-gt-awd-dyno-motycs-sportdevices.jpg 800w, https:\/\/motycs.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/alfarome-gt-awd-dyno-motycs-sportdevices-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/motycs.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/alfarome-gt-awd-dyno-motycs-sportdevices-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/motycs.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/alfarome-gt-awd-dyno-motycs-sportdevices-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/motycs.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/alfarome-gt-awd-dyno-motycs-sportdevices-600x600.jpg 600w, https:\/\/motycs.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/alfarome-gt-awd-dyno-motycs-sportdevices-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1191\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Single-roller dynamometer<\/p><\/div>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">SINGLE-ROLLER CHASSIS DYNAMOMETERS<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/motycs.it\/en\/product\/4wd-chassis-dynamometers\/\">Single-roller chassis dynamometers<\/a><\/strong>, as vehicle power increases, <strong>have over time become the most popular solution among all the different manufacturers <\/strong>of chassis dynos.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">As we can see from the analysis below, tyres find their <strong>optimal operating conditions on the road<\/strong> (image A).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">Looking at the simulations below (images B and C) <strong>we can observe how at the larger diameter of the roller, <\/strong>corresponds to less 'indentation' and thus<strong>\u00a0less stress <\/strong>(image. B) <strong>for tyres<\/strong>, also obtaining:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Increased grip <\/strong>(larger contact area)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Improved maintenance of constant operating conditions<\/strong>, during testing<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1538 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/motycs.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/tyre-deformation-motycs-single-roller-dyno.jpg\" alt=\"Single-roller power test benches\" width=\"800\" height=\"315\" srcset=\"https:\/\/motycs.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/tyre-deformation-motycs-single-roller-dyno.jpg 800w, https:\/\/motycs.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/tyre-deformation-motycs-single-roller-dyno-300x118.jpg 300w, https:\/\/motycs.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/tyre-deformation-motycs-single-roller-dyno-768x302.jpg 768w, https:\/\/motycs.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/tyre-deformation-motycs-single-roller-dyno-600x236.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<h5><\/h5>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">TWIN-ROLLER DYNO TEST BENCHESE<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Originally <strong>born for diagnostic needs<\/strong> (at a time in history when vehicles had much lower powers than today) <strong>offered good stability of the vehicle under test, but sacrificed tyre retention<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This design choice was at the time also justified by the <strong>purposes for which the double-roller bench was originally designed; <\/strong>or its use<strong> within diagnostic centres <\/strong>that they were merely doing <strong>short and quick power tests.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h6><strong>HIGH STRESS CONDITIONS FOR TYRES<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">As can be seen from the figures below (images. D, E) the <strong>car or motorbike test bench with double rollers<\/strong> (whether connected by a belt or not) <strong>submit <\/strong>anyway<strong> tyres under high stress conditions, also due to high indentation <\/strong>due to the<strong>impossibility of using large-diameter rollers, implicit in these solutions<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/motycs.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/tyre-deformation-motycs-double-roller-dyno.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1537 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/motycs.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/tyre-deformation-motycs-double-roller-dyno.jpg\" alt=\"Double roller power test benches\" width=\"800\" height=\"315\" srcset=\"https:\/\/motycs.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/tyre-deformation-motycs-double-roller-dyno.jpg 800w, https:\/\/motycs.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/tyre-deformation-motycs-double-roller-dyno-300x118.jpg 300w, https:\/\/motycs.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/tyre-deformation-motycs-double-roller-dyno-768x302.jpg 768w, https:\/\/motycs.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/tyre-deformation-motycs-double-roller-dyno-600x236.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h6><strong>INCREASINGLY POWERFUL OF MODERN VEHICLES<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">These stressful conditions <strong>become increasingly evident as the power and torque of vehicles increase.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">We therefore think of the <strong>modern endothermic, hybrid or electric vehicles, the torque and power of which have grown disproportionately in recent years<\/strong>, reaching <strong>more than double levels<\/strong> <strong>compared to the powers for which this type of bench <\/strong>double rollers <strong>was initially put on the market <\/strong>(1980s).<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">Typically, <strong>conducting medium\/long-term tests, tyre warm-ups are likely to affect the results<\/strong>; due to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"s1\"><strong>different grip in tyre\/roller contact at different temperatures<\/strong> (cause of <strong>energy dissipation <\/strong>and variation of wheel power readings and the <a href=\"https:\/\/motycs.it\/en\/power-losses-on-chassis-dynamometers\/\"><strong>power<\/strong> <strong>dissipated<\/strong>.<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"s1\"><strong> tyre diameter variations<\/strong>, which could occur due to their <strong>increased internal pressure<\/strong>\u00a0 with possible differences in engine speed readings.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h6><strong>DIFFERENT WHEEL AND ROLLER SPEEDS<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>Further <strong>criticality of double roller dyno test benches<\/strong> is represented by the <strong>different rotation speeds of tyres and rollers. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>During the acceleration period, <strong>tyres naturally tend to want to 'go up' on the front roller <\/strong>(image D)<strong>, deforming even more <\/strong>due to displacement and different vehicle mass distribution<strong>. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This also involves the<strong> displacement of wheel and roller centres of rotation <\/strong>(and relative rolling diameter),<strong> modifying rotation speeds accordingly <\/strong>of the individual components involved (front roller\/rear roller\/tyre).<\/p>\n<p>For <strong>understand this dynamic, one only has to look at Fig. D and E below; the distances from the axes of rotation<\/strong>\u00a0from the centre of rotation of the tyre, <strong>change as the position of the vehicle axle changes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/motycs.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/tyre-deformation-motycs-double-roller-dyno.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1537 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/motycs.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/tyre-deformation-motycs-double-roller-dyno.jpg\" alt=\"Double roller power test benches -
